Archived from groups: microsoft>public>word>spelling>grammar (more info?)

I am running Windows XP SP2 with a Verizon DSL line and MSN Premium browser.
I installed Office 2007 early this year. When I subsequently connect with
the internet with either the MSN Explorer browser or the Internet Explorer
browser and use the email funcitions, I have a spell checker problem. The
problem is that I need an english-US spelling dictionary and the email spell
checker settings only allow me French (Canada or France). I have literally
spent hour on the phone with Verizon and Microsoft and each keeps bouncing me
back to the other with no help in solving the problem. Verizon tells me that
MSN said there is a compatibility issue with the Office 2007 spell checker
and they are working on it. Well, six months seems a long wait for them to
correct the problem. Does anyone have any experience with this issue? Any
suggestions? Your help will be much appreciated. I have a hard time writing
emails in english--a french spelling dictionary just drives me up the wall!

A known issue. You can reinstall the proofing tools from an earlier
version of Office if you have one, or you can install a third-party
spellchecking utility (there are many, some free, some not, just ask
Google).

The only spell checker I have available on is from Word 1997 and I think it
might be too old to be compatible with Office 2007. A third-party spell
checker is a possibility that I will explore. In any event, don't you think
Microsoft is kind of lax for allowing Office 2007 to be published without
resolving the incompatibility issue or for not coming out with a fix right
away. Also, they should have published something in all their newsletters,
etc. about the issue and their plans to fix it. Just a thought. Thanks very
much for your help garfield-n-odie [MVP].

I'm having the same problem - - bought new HP Pavilion PC with Vista and installed Office Small Business 2007 and my spell check in MSN email won't work. I've been online/phone for hours with HP, Microsoft and Verizon (mycarrier for MSN) tech support and still don't have an answer or have it resolved - - my frustration level is boiling.

Duwain:

I just installed today Office 2007 and ran into the same problem. I verified
all language settings in Outlook, Office, and system. Outlook looks to
Office's "Dictionary" for its spellcheck feature. I verified that the
"English" is working in Word. So, it leads me to believe there is a problem
with Office 2007 program - not Outlook. What I plan to do is reinstall
Office 2003 and use the features from the older version until Microsoft
acknowledges and fixes the problem. Gee, I wish I knew how to do

Below is a snip from Bruce Hagen MS-MVO oe

>snip<

You no longer have spell checking capabilities in some languages in Outlook
Express 6.0 after you install the 2007 Microsoft Office system:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932974

Office 2007 breaks OE's spell check. Downloading a free spell check is the
simplest way around this.

Some free spell check programs.

Vampirefo:

TinySpell:
http://www.tinyspell.m6.net/ (Checks the spelling as you type).

Or from this blog:
http://pschmid.net/blog/2006/11/13/80

After installing Office 2007 RTM, you don't have English as a choice of
language in the spell checker of Outlook Express and potentially other
programs.

a.. Office 2007 is replacing the v.3 English Proofing Tools that shipped
in prior versions of Office with a new version (v.6). There are a number of
changes in this new version, but the one that is causing this problem is
that Outlook Express doesn't understand the new English Proofing Tools. This
is a problem because Outlook Express has never shipped with its own proofing
tools but has used the ones shipped by Office.
b.. There are a few scenarios in which you won't run into this problem:
a.. An upgrade from Office 2003 or earlier to Office 2007 RTM if you
don't manually uninstall the earlier version of Office.
b.. A configuration in which Office 2003 (or earlier) has not been
removed.
For example, I have Office 2003 still on both of my computers, and I
still have English in Outlook Express.
c.. The workaround for this problem is to install the English dictionary
from Office 2003 (or Office XP). There should be no need to install all of
Office just the dictionary. The English Proofing Tools can be found in the
Custom Install tree under Office Shared Features|Proofing Tools|English.

Word 2007 also creates an incompatibility problem for the spell checker in MSN Mail (part of MSN Explorer). Word 2007s solution is the third party spell check. Here are the suggestions from the Word support folks at Microsoft (who tell me that MSN is "working" on a solution):

Your solution was the best took about 5 minutes. Put in 2003 office CD did all custom chose Proofing tools in English which only downloaded the proofing tools. Wrote a message in MSN Hotmail, did a spell check ......every thing worked....thank you : Saved me lots of time and trial by error!!!

I just wanted to let you know that I couldn't download the Majorgeeks spell checker...my Vista wouldn't let me?...but was able to download the tinyspell with no problem! It drives me a little insane but it's better than nothing. I have HP with Vista, use MSN Premium for e-mail, and just downloaded Office 2007 awhile ago. Been searching for an answer this week and my friend, whose son works for Microsoft, suggested I google it which is how I found you guys! THANKS Smile

I only had Office 2000 CD so I gave it shot and it worked fabulously. It took about 10 minutes. I am so impressed that I joined the club and I'm glad I did. Thanks for the straight forward information. Very Happy
