A colleague and I were trying to use the Excel 2003 help menu expecting to use the "index" option. Instead we get this Assistance menu with a "search for" textbox.

Is there a way to restore and use the old version?

Only if you can find old versions of the *.chm files and rename them as the
newer versions...............and renaming the 2003 files so's Excel will not
recognize them.

Excel97's XLMAIN8.chm would be renamed to XLMAIN11.chm

You would lose any help on the new features for Excel 2003 so in my opinion
best to learn how to use the "search for" feature.

How would this add functionality to a version that dropped what OP needs a
couple of versions past?

Excel 2002 and newer do not have an "Index" in their help files.
