How do I suppress a header or footer on 1 page in a multi-page document?

Allan,

If you set up the document to use a different first page header/footer (in
Word 2003 and most earlier versions click File | Page Setup... Layout tab),
this should achieve the desired result. This process should automatically
configure the first page header/footer with nothing in them and retain the
current header/footer content for use in the second and subsequent pages.
However, as is always the case in these situations, Murphy's Law does apply,
so I would recommend making a backup copy of your document before attempting
to modify it.

It depends on which page it is that you want to suppress the header or
footer on. If it's the first page of the document (or a section), then
Gordon's instructions will work. If not, post back for other options.

My apologies. I misread "on 1 page" as "on page 1". The OP has subsequently
contacted me privately, and I have provided him with additional information
as follows.

Hi! Gordon:

Hypothetically, if you have a 10 pg. document w/ the same header on each pg.
except pg 1 (because you used the method of page setup...format...different
1st pg.)....but what if you want to suppress that same header on pg. 5 only
w/ the remaining pgs. 2-4 & 6-10 retaining it?

My reply:
You can't really suppress the header on a single page in the middle of a
document, but you can do something similar by putting that page in its own
section and then modifying the header for that section alone. There is a bit
of a risk with this approach, however, in that you must use "Next Page"
section breaks and this may have an affect on the automatic pagination of
the document. Otherwise, it's not really that much different from having a
landscape section in the middle of a document - although that can be
*considerably* more difficult to do! Just make sure you insert both section
breaks and disconnect the headers from each other _before_ you delete the
header content on page 5.

Another method, if it is known for certain that the unnumbered page will
always be page 5 is to use an IF field:

{ IF { PAGE } = "5" "" { PAGE } }

or

{ IF { PAGE } <> "5" { PAGE } }

Suzanne,

That will work if Allan just wants to suppress the page number on page 5,
but it is my understanding that he wants to suppress the entire header and
footer on that page...

In that case, the construction is:

{ IF { PAGE } = "5" "" "Content of header" }

or

{ IF { PAGE } <> "5" "Content of header" }

The entire header would be pasted in between the quotes.
