Hi bajlearning,
Also look at the fill colors. If they're set to white nothing
you do with gridlines will have any effect.

I have tried everything listed here (Excel 2003) AND completly removed OFFice
and reinstalled it and no luck.
The work around is to save a single sheet with the gridline color set to
GRAY 50%, and and inserted sheets will be blank until you repete this
process. The templates are in XLStart (not the default template folder). It
needs to be named BOOK and saved as a TEMPLATE not an excel document. This
works, but I do not like not knowing how to really fix the problem.
Let me know any suggestions, please... |

Maybe the color of the gridlines has been changed to white or
some other color that does not have sufficient contrast.
Look just below where gridlines are checked in Tools | Options.

Excel cells have no fill colour by default. When you make a block of cells' fill colour anything other than "No fill", the grid lines disappear.
Highlight the block where you want the grid lines back and set the fill colour to "No fill". Your grid lines will reappear without having to border things.
If you want the fill colour to be something other that "No fill", then you have to put the borders in explicitly.

| I've seen users open spreadsheets and complain that only some of the gridlines appear. After looking at the sheets, I discovered the data in the cells to the right had trailing spaces. These spaces covered the vertical gridlines on the cells to the left. Truncating the spaces solved the issue. |

| Try changing the brightness/contrast settings on your monitor. I had the same problem, and this solved it for me. |

Ok, I've looked at every option I can find in excel, and I have read many posts about the gridlines and not one, except this one, has mentioned my same problem.
I have no vertical gridlines. I have gone to Tools--> Options--> View and Gridlines is checked, the gridline color is set to automatic, the cell fill is set to automatic, and it is not on a sheet I've been working in, this is happening in a brand new workbook. It's coming up as the default like that.
I can see my horizontal gridlines but no vertical. If I highlight the cells like I'm about to copy them or something, then I can see the gridlines, and if I change the gridline color to Gray 50% or black I can see them. I know it's not the brightness of my monitor because it's been fine up until today and no setting have changed. The closest thing that I've done is opened a 07 Excel document in Excel 03, and it was from a trusted source, it was a workbook from MS that I copied from my laptop to my desktop.
Here's what I want to try but I don't know where the default template is. I want to delete the default workbook and have Excel recreate it. Is the default file in XLStart? |

I'm not sure if you ever found a solution. I just now came across this while trying to figure it out myself. Finally, I realized that it was only doing gridlines for the rows that had at least something in them such as a period or maybe give each row a number in which you want to have lines. This is what worked for me after trying a number of the things below.
