Freeware utility to remove attachments?

Does it exists any freeware utility which allows removing attachments from
all of my messages, before my mailbox reaches 2 GB size???

I'd actually like to have a "dummy attachment" in my messages (so I can see
the "attachment icon" in messages list) which just links to the real
attachment, saved somewhere. Is this possible?
