Flopping back to Japanese input mode

So far Microsoft Word XP seems to be the only program affected, and only a
new computer that I received a few months ago. Not a serious problem, but
annoying, and I haven't been able to observe any definitive pattern. Prior
to this, when working in English, the computer would stay in the English
input mode. Now it has a tendency to flop back into Japanese input mode.
There are several triggers, and some of them seem pretty consistent. For
example, right clicking on a word to correct the spelling will almost always
cause it to switch to Japanese input mode. The OS is the Japanese edition of
Windows XP Professional.

I suspect this is an old problem and I simply failed to find the appropriate
references (in the Microsoft website and via Google Groups). Because of
other problems with Word XP, I only switched to it recently, as part of an
upgrade to this new PC. However, I've always been doing a lot of English
editing with Word, and it's a new nuisance to me...

Did you setup Default language as english in Microsoft language Settings?
(Microsoft Office Tools > Microsoft Office Language Settings)

Also try to set English to you default language and region in Windows Control panel.

Thanks for the reminder. I have a fuzzy recollection of playing with the
Microsoft Office Language Settings at some point. When I checked just now,
the main setting was set for Japanese, so I went ahead and switched it to
English--though now I'm expecting fresh problems when I'm working with
Japanese documents... It would be better if Word was smart enough to know
when it isn't smart enough. Doing nothing in such cases is very often the
best thing to do...

With regards to the system language settings, they are all Japanese, and my
experiences with touching them have been rather painful, so I'll just let
them be for now.

Not sure what other hypothetical straws to grasp at. Some kind of hidden
language setting in the files? Most of them originated with Japanese
people...

Hi....

I've been told that there is a bug with Standard IME when you run
spellchecker,
the input mode switch back to Japanese, even when you were in English mode
when
you entered the spellchecker. (The auto spell check is affected, too.)

This does not happen in Natural Input.

I don't know if MS has plan to fix the Standard IME (or tell people to move
to
Natural Input.

At first I didn't understand what you meant, and I thought you were talking
about the general setting chooser that includes ATOK/IME97/MS-IME/VJE/WX.
(How'd ATOK get in here? I haven't used Ichitaro in ages.) However, I
discovered that you are talking about the popup option on the $BF~NOJ}<0(B
(input form or method?) which includes Natural Input (in katakana). However,
that option is currently not enabled on my machine. However, with your
helpful hint, I will pursue that approach. Thanks again.

Turns out that the Natural Input is enabled from within Word--but it doesn't
stop the misbehavior. Still flops back into Japanese mode. It might be less
frequent under that mode, or perhaps I've gotten better at avoiding the
triggers.

Hi...
mmm... For me (when using Natural Input), the input mode have not switch
back to English
after the spell checker execution....
But, I usually use the standard IME (because I'm used to using Esc to cancel
IME conversion),
When the "input flip" start to cause a lot of problem, I usually turn off
IME (switch the keyboard to
English) by Alt-Shift.
