Hi All,
We have one user on our domain who has a problem opening 2 excel
spreadsheets, in that they are extremely slow to open and save and close.
Using the spreadsheet once it has opened is fine its just when you come to
save it or close (even without saving) it takes about 4 or 5 minutes. The
excel files are both less than 500KB. The PC is not the fastest machine ever
but its certainly not that bad, and can open other excel documents fine. If
the user logs onto another PC, they do not have the problem though. The files
are located on a network drive and when i copy them to the local drive, they
work fine. However, the user can open other spreadsheets from that very same
network drive directory without a problem. It is a shared workbook but no
other users have any problems. I have turned off things like automatically
calculate and check external file references, and i have removed all temp
files. Really out of ideas, any suggestions? |

This sounds suspiciously to me like there is some kind of temp file(s) on
the network. Have you checked? But, just to be sure, I would troubleshoot
their Excel...perhaps there's a file in their XLSTART or something that's
interfering...

Or perhaps there's something weird with the workbook:

where would i check for temp files on the network? also, it is only this
machine thats having the problem, surely if the temp files are on the network
then every machine would have the problem? nothing in the xlstart and ive
completely re-installed office. no change

I had the same problem on a new HP laptop with Vista Business and a whole bunch of HP crapware loaded, including Norton Antivirus. There is much said on the web how Norton can cause slow loading of Word and Excel files. Since I have another antivirus program I use, I disabled Norton from loading in msconfig. Still had painfully slow Office loads.
As a hope and a prayer, I totally uninstalled Norton, and now Office aps loads like they should. I'm not sure what was happening, but I'm guessing opening an Office ap must have somehow caused Norton to load, or at least tried to cause Norton to load. Get rid of Norton Antivirus and get something else that plays nice with MS Office. |
