Archived from groups: microsoft>public>excel>setup (more info?)

Several of the users we support are now experiencing Excel 2003 crashing when
they attempt to save an excel doc. A Microsoft dialogue box then asks them if
they want to auto recover the document and send Microsoft an error report.
this is now starting happen to more and more users, and no clue as to why.
I have a copy/paste of an event in the application log if this helps;

Faulting application excel.exe, version 11.0.8142.0, stamp 465f142b,
faulting module excel.exe, version 11.0.8142.0, stamp 465f142b, debug? 0,
fault address 0x0002a99c.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

and

Hanging application EXCEL.EXE, version 11.0.8142.0, hang module hungapp,
version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000.

This is causing a tremendous amount of work for users and an unstable Excel.

Can anyone out there help? PLEASE!!!

thank you in advance

Anyone out there have any ideas? This must have happened before to someone.
If so, please chime in.

Yes they are saving to a network drive. I thought maybe at 1st that it had
something to do wth the location they were saving to, possibly permissions or
a corrupt drive but they are different locations. The problem seems to be bad
some days and then not so much other days. No consistency, very strange.

Do you have any ideas?

Sorry to be so long (vacation), esp. when I can't offer any sure-fire solution.
I our work environment I've had this happen from time to time and it's usually been the
case that the network connection has been interrupted.
Can't say that is the cause of your woes but the results are identical.
That's about all I can offer.

Hi there,

Just to let you know one of our users are experiencing the same modname"hungapp" error. However it is with office 2000, and is also quite random and cannot be replicated. The user also works off a network drive.

Usually if modname is a DLL file I am able to fix by finding and replacing said DLL. What could hungapp possibly be telling me other than it has hung up?? Smile

Add: Some other guy was able to fix a similar problem/same error by repairing Office. Will give that a shot with the user when he available and let you know. As we have many users having issues and crashes with Excel I am trying to find something common between them, but the errors are always different for other users.

Seems it fixed a few problems, whether or not it is related to yours Im not entirely sure but I cannot try for my user as he is unavailable.

For MS Excel files advise - recover Excel, may supports almost all existing versions of XLS and XLSX formats: Microsoft Excel 97, 2000, XP, 2002, 2003 and 2007 (xlsx repair), can help the users to avoid the loss of important data most often processed using spreadsheets, such as statistical, economic, science information, etc, program scans the specified Microsoft Excel worksheet and gets all available information from it.

Hi,

If this happens to just one excel doc, the file is probably corrupted or something. I think you can try a utility called Advanced Excel Repair to repair your Excel xls file. It works rather well for my corrupt Excel xls files. Its web address is http://www.datanumen.com/aer/

Hope this still can help.

We had the same problem and error message mentioned here with saving down to Excel 97-2003 (xls) format using Excel 2007, very weird and it would happen even when saving that file to a local drive. The same error occured on any PC if we tried to move the file and open it elsewhere.

In our situation we had to save down to Excel 97-2003 format even though we use Excel 2007. If we saved the file to the new Excel 2007 format xlsx then we were able to save, but not down to Excel 2003 xls format.

I will explain how I sorted our problem out, it may work similar in Excel 2003, I have never used that version, I jumped from 2000 to 2007.

Not sure if your 2003 version has an option called Selection Pane? In 2007 it is under the Page Layout Tab.

The Selection Pane shows you a list of what additional objects you inserted into your current sheet, like charts, pictures, text boxes etc. If you have more then one sheet in a workbook you must do each sheet seprately the same way.

If you select one of the objects in the selection pane that appears to the right, you can view on the sheet (to your left) where it is active.

I removed all the objects that were inserted in error, (not suppose to be there) most often an empty chart dragged smaller. It was as if someone had tried to insert a chart or text box for example and instead of deleting it, dragged it smaller on the screen and then deselected it, unless you actually accidentally click on that area, you would never know it is there, the selection pane can help you find it. I often found them to the far left of the column A. Some in blank rows way below the end of the data in the sheet.

After removing these objects the workbook saves perfectly and immediately.

This may help toward finding the solution in 2003

Finally! An accurate description of the SAME problem my users are having!

Here's some new info on this irritating, time consuming, seemingly unsolvable riddle from our perspective:

Repairing MS Office (2003) does not resolve this issue for our users.

Issue most commonly occurs pasting to or saving a worksheet located in a Network Drive - HOWEVER - there have been (rare) occurances of the problem on a local drive.

In most cases, Event Viewer will not show an application hang event for Excel (although Outlook occasionally shows up as having hung)

This issue (as mentioned previously) seems to occur in waves - all will operate normally for a time then several days of increasingly frustrated users ensue, before it calms down again.

The most 'fun' part of this issue from a troubleshooting perspective.
I've had this issue occur for users at seperate locations (ie: Different cities) at the same time. (Figure that one out Gurus! ... Pretty please?)

As this dramatically affects the productivity of our users from time to time, and is quite possibly one of the most frustrating issues I've yet encountered to date in my role as Centre Administrator, I would LOVE for someone to post a confirmed working resolution for this. Obviously I will tell the boss I came up with it myself and claim the glory Wink

I'm thinking this is related to a network problem. I say related because it doesn't make any sense to me that a network issue would effect so many users for such a lengthy period of time - and because I can't think of a network issue that would hit only some users and not others. Is there any way a network glitch can specifically effect Excel that anyone is aware of???

Fix found! - It would appear (for our site anyway) that it's the HTML formatting being copied to Excel that triggers the deep freeze - Solution? : Double click to cell the data is being copied to paste as text (or go the long way around via the mouse.

Presumably, you could also set up a Macro in the sheet being used to strip the HTML, some of our guys are working on this now...
