Is it possible to turn off the spelling and grammar check from one section of
a document. I am writing a large thesis with references >100 all the author
and journal names are not recognised it would be nice if i didn't have to
spell check them every time .
Thanks

Select the text you want skipped, then, double-click the language indicator
in the status bar (or choose Tools - Language - Set Language), and enable
"Do not check spelling or grammar".

Thanks Herb, But this does not resolve my problem. My reference list is
generated by Endnote and I can not disable spell checking in this way

I'm not familiar with Endnote, so I don't know why this won't work. What
exactly doesn't work?
Does Endnote use particular style/s for the references? If so, then modify
that/those style/s and turn off the spelling for that style. (At the bottom
left in the Modify Style dialog, click Format - Language, etc.)

I think endnote generates its biblography as a VBA field. You can toggle the
field code on and off by right clicking. If I select the biblography as
either text or code and double click the language selection the spelling
option is always filled with a green box (as if the condition is true and
false within the selected text). If I click the option I can check and
uncheck the box but regardless of how I leave it it always returns to a green
box if I look again. In the don't check spelling state words are underlined
for both spelling and grammar problems.

I downloaded EndNote, and am using the 30 day trial so I can see what you're
talking about.
Word fields aren't VBA fields, they're simply fields. VBA is something
different. EndNote creates the bibliography using an {ADDIN EN.REFLIST}
field. It creates inline cites using {ADDIN EN.CITE } fields
I'm able to suppress spelling and grammar by selecting the field,
double-clicking on English (U.S.) on the status bar, ticking "Do not check
spelling or grammar", and clicking OK.
You'll get the green box in the "Do not check..." option if the selection
contains a mixture of text that's formatted with the setting turned on and
turned off.
I'm not seeing what you're seeing.
What version of Word are you using? I've tested this in Word 2003 and 2007.
