Custom Dictionary - Base Language Other than US English

Hi. I use Word 2004 for Mac. I can't seem to add words to a custom dictionary
unless the base dictionary is U.S. English. I'm Canadian, so I want to set my
base dictionary to U.K. or Canadian English and be able to add custom words
to it, but it won't let me add words to the dictionary unless it's in U.S.
English. I can switch to U.K. English, but it won't let me add anything to
that dictionary.

Any help? I'm either stuck auto-correcting every time I need to use the U.K.
(proper, for my country) spelling, or not being able to modify my dictionary.

Assuming the same applies to Mac as for WinWord...

Either the dictionary has to match EXACTLY the language with which the text is
formatted, or it should have NO language.

Try setting the dictionary to no language (or all languages, whichever your
interface offers). That way it should work no matter which "flavor" of English
your text is formatted with. If you need dialect-specific (or language specific
if you work with more than one language) you can set up additional dictionaries.
