Copying a picture after rotating it???

I know it sounds really simple but I can't seem to do it using word 2003

- I scanned a picture (which had a border around it with square boxes)
- After I rotating it, the square dots around the edge of the picture turned
to circles.
- Now I can't copy the picture and re-paste it into word or any other program.

Can somebody please tell me what I'm doing wrong.
