I would like to know if it is possible to make it that when I open a
particular document written in a foreign language that I should automatically
be able to write in that language. At the moment every time I open it I have
to change from English to that language.

You can change the language of the text, either by applying the desired
language as direct formatting (via the Language dialog box) or by changing
the language of the appropriate style.

How do you change the language of a particular style?

Generally, you change the language of a style the way you change other
settings of a style: Display the Modify Style dialog box, and then click
Format, Language. (You should modify the Normal style; the language settings
of that style are inherited by its "children" styles.) For details, tell us
your version of Word.

Thanks for quick response. Word 2003. I tried doing what you wrote but it
still keeps the default language as English

Which style is applied to text? If it is in fact the Normal style, the
language may be applied on top of the style, as direct formatting. The
quickest fix is to select the whole document using Ctrl+A and then apply the
desired language via Tools | Language | Set Language.

Note that you cannot actually spell check (and/or hyphenate) in that other
language unless it has been installed on your computer.
