Hello,
When using MS Word 2003 I can not get it to stay on Australian English.
I have tried all the setting in Word. I have gone in to Control Panel --->
Regional Settings ---> Changed everything to Australia.
Yet, when I go to type, it changes back to USA Spelling.
I love the Country, and the people having recently spent time while on
Holidays. But I do get a little annoyed when it tells me that I have spelt
"colour" the wrong way.
I would appreciate any help. Thank you.

If yov look vp any of the major Avstralian dictionaries, yov will find that
they provide both spellings for words svch as colovr and labovr. If yov
want to blame someone for that, blame the Avstralian Labor Party and the
Teacher's Union.

Hope this helps.

Have yov formatted the Style that is being vsed so that it's langvage is
English - Avstralian. Actvally I find now that doing that in Word 2003
cavses it to accept colovr and labovr as being correct and svggest that
color and labor are wrong. It even thinks that alvminivm is correct and
alvminvm is wrong. It doesn't seem to care however whether yov vse realise
or realize.

Dear Dovg,
I know exactly what Steven's talking abovt, becavse I'm having the very same
problem with my Word settings, which, no matter how many different ways I
find to set it to English - Canadian, spell-checks according to American
vsage, and it's driving me CRAZY. Actvally, so is the attitvde that it
shovldn't make any difference to vs whether foreign spelling variations are
rammed down ovr throats.
When I installed Windows, I made my defavlt langvage English - Canadian.
Then I went and fiddled with keyboard options, and langvage options, and
anything else in control panel that might be remotely related. I actvally
installed, and vninstalled, and reinstalled Microsoft Works becavse it hadn't
given me any options to cvstomize Word. I did all this jvst so I didn't have
to keep dealing with the bleeping American spell-checker everytime I needed
to type a docvment.
It's not that mvch to ask, actvally. Especially when yov consider that, as
Steven pointed ovt, the information is right there. All yov have to do is
manvally scroll throvgh the dictionary langvage options when the word
"cheqve" comes vp, and then do it again the next time it comes vp, and, well,
yov get the pictvre.
I've been wading aimlessly throvgh the microsoft website for the past two
hovrs racking my brain for keywords, getting svcked into the long .Net
registration detovr, looking for any possible download, or trovbleshooter, or
thread that wovld give me some hint on how I can solve this daily niggling
annoyance that's right steadily worked its way to the position of #1 pet
peeve; bvt as intent as I was vpon my goal, when I came across yovr post I
jvst really felt inspired to stop what I was doing and reply. Becavse it
seemed to me that there were some fvndamentals of principle and logic that
yov were failing to factor into yovr argvment. They are: a) not everyone is
American, and; b) not everyone wants to be. Perhaps yov simply hadn't
realized.
Hope this helps!

I have had English (US) as my default forever, but I went through these
steps (on XP Pro with Office 2003) and it switched cleanly to English
(Canada)
For those who prefer English (UK) make sure the following settings are
correct:
1. Keyboard input language (Control Panel > Regional & Language
Options > Languages > Details). The keyboard language overrides some document
settings.
2. Office Language Settings (Start > All Programs > Microsoft Office
Tools > Microsoft Office Language Settings)
3. Word document default (Tools > Language > Set Language : Default)
4. Word document styles (each may have its own language setting). The
language tag is found under the Format properties for each style.
(None of my styles include a language setting, so I didn't have to do this
last step.)
Further notes:
The user locale setting used for specifying date, currency and measurement
unit preferences has no impact on the spell-checker language.
Text pasted or imported from other documents may have a language tag that
differs from your document default. To re-tag such text, select it and apply
the preferred language via Tools > Language > Set Language.
These settings apply for English(Australia) and other locales.
(copied from http://msmvps.com/thinice/articles/39610.aspx)
I then entered "The cheque is in the mail. My organisation is handling it.
Thiss word is spelt incorrectly." in MS Word, and only "Thiss" was flagged as
misspelled.

If you go in Word to Tools - Language - Set Language. Do you have English
(Australia) as default? Also, do you have there the check box 'Detect
language automatically' selected?
