After installing office 2007 my spell checker quit working totally. After
googling I found one idea about the problem being in my profile. So I log in
as someone else on my machine and everything works fine. But logged in as me
it fails. Now I'm on a corporate network so I'm not sure if I can delete my
profile some way or what. Any ideas? |

I had the same problem and solved it as follows:
Start Regedit and goto the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Proofing
Tools\1.0\Override\en-US
I had 2 entries (DLL and LEX) pointing to non-existing files.
Rename these to oldDLL and oldLEX.
After this change all Spell Checking worked normal again.
Hopes this helps you as well.

May be I am missing something, but if you are on a corporate network,
how come you do not bring in first the IT guys? Seems to me, that would
be the safest way (for your work station and your position:-)) to solve
the problem. But my question does not diminish the interest of the
answer that has been provided.

Actually I am IT. I like using the news groups to keep from reinventing the

Sorry, I was mislead by the "Now I'm on a corporate network". I did not
imagine you were "THE network" . I of course agree, the very purpose
of NG is to share knowledge.

Unfortunately, a thorough search of the registry failed to uncover the key
you cited. Then again, I am using Windows Vista and perhaps the key you
refer to is for XP only?

I had this same problem with spell checker not working. I run office2007 enterprise on top of xp sp2.
I went to use this fix and didn't have the keys mentioned. I had HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Proofing\Tools\1.0 but no override or en-US.
So, I create the keys, and left nothing but the blank default in them - and shazaam! - my spell checker works now.
Thanks for the great fix! Saved my lyfe. |

I have two computers running XP pro, with the same identical copy MS Office Enterprise. Both -spell check not working. One computer had the override file which I changed to oldDLL...oldLEX . Wow, IT WORKED !!! THANK YOU !
However, the other compter didn't have these keys as mentioned above. I thought this was weird. My question at this point is; "How do I create new keys?
Before I had read this reply I exported the override folder with the en-US and the oldDLL and oldLEX onto a usb stick and ran it on the other compter. It seemed to install just fine right where its supposed to go but spell check is still not working on that machine. Damn! Maybe I should delete them and try creating them myself? HELP!! Please !!! |

I had a user with the same problem and none of the registry solutions or dictionary/language settings were the issue. I found the problem in the Add-Ins section of Word Options...
At the bottom of the screen select Manage: Disabled Addins > Go...
Another screen indicated: The items listed below were disabled because they prevented Word from functioning correctly....
Addin: speller en-us (nlsdata00009.dll)
I selected it, then clicked the Enable button and all was well again.
BTW, I also ran the Word Options > Resources > run Microsoft Office Diagnostics which found and fix one problem - may or may not have been related.
I restarted Word to make sure the enabled Addin remained active. So far, so good. |

I searched a variety of forums, MS's own website, etc and couldn't find a solution to get Office Spell Check to work. Office spell checker did not work from an upgrade of 2003 to 2007. It never worked from the start. Searching high and low was no solution. I finally called Microsoft and they gave me this as a fix, which actually worked.
--------------------------------------
To get the spell checker in office working
Resolution/Recommendations:
Backup of reg key
Action: Opened on Registry
• Clicked on HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools
• Renamed the "Proofing tools" folder under the Shared Tools folder
. Reload Word or Outlook and see if that fixed it.
------------------
To get to RegEdit, click start>run>regedit, return.
To back up the reg key, you use the drop down menu, Export>save as: backup.reg on your desktop. Then follow the instructions above. |

| I did not have any luck with any of the above solutions but here is how I fixed my issue. First of all I was using the Office customization tool to setup an unattended install and in doing so I created an MST file. My first issue was that I left one of my MST files in the updates folder and it was competing with the MST file I was pointing to in the install path. So I removed the MST from the updates folder first. Also I found that when selecting what products to install in the customization tool I had to choose run from local PC and it marked it with an [F] so from my understanding this forces the selection. After doing this my install is working correctly to install on PC's that currently have Office 2003 on them. Hope this can help somebody. |

Hello,
This is strange as it WAS working then sudden quit.
Editing an email in Outlook I noticed a couple obvious errors; SpCk found one, skipping the rest (no red underline either).
Selecting the specific word, still reported nothing. Tried typing a new mispelled word that was also ignored.
I copied the text to Word, same issue....
Like with Vista, my Win7 Pro didn't have the RegKeys so I created blank keys as suggested (renaming the existing UProof folder as well) but it's still not working...
Any ideas? It WAS working, just stopped???
Thanks |

Thanks to contributor... "DaveEllisInNY"
FYI:
Under Set Language there is an elusive "Do Not Check Spelling" box that overrides any DO check spelling you might set...
I am using Office 2007/Windows 7 Pro. Honestly I don't know how [or when] this box could have been selected since it suddenly stopped working, almost mid stream. Besides, since installation, I've only had the need for the one default language and on no occasion visited the Set Language area at all...?
MS update prehaps???
Oh well, IF it just stops, try restarting with this before messing with the registry |

My situation was the same as the poster Topaz's from Dec 2006. His story mirrors mine to the "Tee"! I would have thought by now Microfart would have fixed this bug but at $50 a pop for a tech support call its no wonder those geniuses just cant get this big ole issue fixed. I tried absolutely everything including MS service pack 1 and 2 which didn't work either.
One suggestion that did work was this:
I did a custom install of Office 2003 from the cd and chose to install ONLY the English proofing tools for Word and now as one poster put it, I can misspell with ease! At first I did an install of the proofing tools for all of the programs but it made Outlook stop working for some odd reason. So only install the proofing tools for Word. Now all my programs work just fine and the spell checker works like it should across the suite.
Hope my fix works for someone else! I was compelled to find this site again and give back to tell what worked for me because I know what a nightmarish headache this can be especially when your job depends on docs being perfect!
