It looks like a baby. You can have babies of all sorts of species. A
baby elephant, a baby deer, a baby cat, a baby grasshopper (maybe). So
what is the "star child" a baby of? A baby of a new life form, but
that means he's going to grow up and become a man? What then will he
look like? Isn't it possible to do age-construction imagery (whatever
you call it, that police do, to find missing persons who have been
missing for a while -- "here is how she would look at age 23"). If you
did that software on the Star Child, what do you get? Some weird man?

Embryos look a bit alien.

You have insufficiently suspended disbelief. The Star Child is just
one of a whole load of unbelievable, symbolic elements in "2001".
Highly advanced civilizations communicate, not travel.
