It is tempting to compare this film with "The Proposal", so I will.
In both we have a Battle of the Sexes, where initial dislike eventually
turns to love, and why? probably because there was a hidden attraction in
the first place.
In both we have a woman boss who goes through some kind of transformation,
in spite of herself, and accepts the inevitable.
What is it that women want re a man? One who is fiercely devoted to her,
and thinks she is the only person for him. He may be a philanderer
originally, or not, but, in the end, SHE is the only one.
"The Ugly Truth" is quite sexually explicit, or frank (depending how you
regard this), and Mike (Gerard Butler) shocks and repels Abby (Katherine
Heigl) when she first sees and hears him on TV - giving his frank assessment
of the Male Animal.
He is seconded onto her own TV network (she is a producer), and,
horrors, even onto her own show.
Needless to say, he does his own thing - and ratings soar; hence, she
can't get rid of him.
However, he manages to give her a few tips on how to hook her attractive
doctor neighbour, but then regrets his generosity as he himself falls for
this blonde bombshell, in spite of his cynical attitude.
As in "The Proposal", any Triangle has to be resolved somehow, and no
prizes for guessing the result in this movie.
Quite an entertaining film, and, like all rom-coms, leaves us with the
impression They Both Lived Happily Ever After. If they didn't, then, in the
Battle of the Sexes, they can't complain they didn't have prior practice.
Recommended viewing along similar lines: Peter Sellers in old B&W
classic: "The Battle of the Sexes" where, once again, a woman with
business-life aspirations has to cope with a male (and possible wedding
bells?) |

Started out funny, but turned into a sappy chick flick ending.
