Produced during the early days of talking pictures, yet enhanced only by
music and sound effects, City Lights was Charlie Chaplin's greatest
achievement as actor and director. The Tramp loves a blind flower girl who
thinks he's a millionaire, and to help her, he needs the assistance of a
real millionaire who only recognizes him when tipsy! One of the greatest
movies ever made, this comic and emotional masterpiece builds to an
unforgettable finish. With Virginia Cherrill, Harry Myers.
Composer/Director: Charles Chaplin. (US 1931) 86 min.

New 35mm prints of these immortal classics were made to celebrate the 30th
anniversary of the venerable New York-based distributor Kino International.

Charlie Chaplin's first all-talking picture was an audacious, often
hilarious, satire of fascism made on the eve of world war. He plays dual
roles: a Jewish barber reminiscent of The Tramp, and Adenoid Hynkel,
ruthless dictator of Tomania (under the sign of the double-cross). Only
Chaplin could have gotten away with this, and only he could have made it
work so well. Character actor Jack Oakie steals some scenes as Hynkel's
fellow dictator, Benzino Napaloni of Bacteria. With Paulette Goddard.
Composer/Writer/Director: Charles Chaplin. (US 1940) 128 min.
