I am starting off with a tv show i just watched "The Rivals of Sherlock Holmes" (1971) (an excellent tv series)

I am putting it here and not in rec.arts.tv because a film follows

the first episode was "a message from the deep sea" with John Neville as Dr Thorndyke, an eminent forensic scientist and
university lecturer, calle din to solve a baffling case..

So help me as I was watching this episode and watching Neville as Thorndyke solving the crime, all I kept thinking of

was "A Study in Terror" (1966) in which Nelville played Sherlock Holmes.

Watch the ones with Dorrington as detective. He is quite an interesting
character.
