These folks made a better horror movie with $15K than Hollywood makes
with 15 mil! There's no blood and guts, it's old fashioned suspense!
It's set in San Diego and based on a true story

Meh. The wife and I sawr it on Friday night. It was good- not
great. The end of the movie came way too fast and rushed through- and
there were a few plot holes -
the guy actor is awful- but having said all of that - I shrieked like
an 8 year old school girl on a couple of occasions - so it did it's
job.

I've never understood the backlash against The Blair Witch Project.
Okay, maybe as a horror movie it has its problems, but as a study of
what people act like when they're scared, when they're clueless and in
something over their heads, then I think its entirely succesful.
After ten years it's time to stop using it as the go-to pick for
overhyped horror movie. The same thing might happen to Paranormal
Activity. When something is promoted as "the scariest movie" ever,
then it's heading for a fall. Unless its something from Asia in which
case the if-it's-foreign-it's-better, vibe protects it from backlash
or accusatons of hype. |

I think the 'backlash' against tBWP owes to its marketing, which
ultimately convinced us that our friends, neighbors, and lost pets
were recommending it as the new and universally horrifying (say)
EXORCIST. Still, I'll defend it as a horror-movie ...and maybe even
as a seminal one.except that imitation of it has been (justifiably)
short-lived. And I'm referring not to its "found-footage" narrative
voice -- which I think is here to stay -- but rather to its denouement
signpost directing the viewer to seek the Devil in his own head...
(which, after all, was obliquely EXORCIST's cachet, too...)

I agree. I intentionally don't see over-hyped films while the hype is
hot. So I saw "Blair Witch" years after its release. I liked it
because it took a new tack on the storytelling and because the
presentation isn't overblown and full of makeup stains. That it has
problems as a film almost adds to its charm. It's not as great as the
hype had it but it's far better than the backlash describes.

They could easily make a horror movie that would scare just about
anyone, but they never will because of potential liability for anyone
given a heart attack or "traumatized" by the movie. Why do you think
they telegraph everything in movies and keep the suspense levels low? |

I followed along on their website for two or three months before the
movie came out. The back story created was actually pretty interesting.
However, when the movie finally came out, I would say it was pretty
much impossible not to be hugely disappointed. Moreover, the two dudes
that made the thing haven't exactly been God's gift to filmmaking in
the interim.
The same thing might happen to Paranormal

I wasn't expecting the world's scariest movie, just something that was
well made, even if on a shoestring budget. There are some tremendous
movies that fall in the category of "ghost story", the orig. "Dark
Water" and "The Devil's Backbone" to name two. Blair Witch would rank
near the bottom of ghost movies that I've seen. |

I agree, it's a good little creep fest, much more effective then the
usual goretoon out of Hollywood. It's a pleasure to see someone do so
much with so little, as opposed to Hollywood horror flicks, where so
little is done with so much. Sure, "Paranormal Activity" is a little
dumb in spots, but it delivered more willies then any film I've seen
in quite a few years. Not bad for a $15K budget. |

Nonsense! The easy fix is to revive old-school, William Castle style
gimmicky. When I saw Peter Jackson's "Dead Alive" (known as
"Braindead" in some circles), I had to sign a waiver agreeing not to
idemnify the theater if I suffered a heart attack... although there
was an ambulance standing by outside, just in case. Sexy nurses, too.
Moviegoers unwilling to accept those terms are probably too
chickenshit to see the movie, anyway.

It sounds like a Leslie Nielsen title but if it works, good stuff. the
horror genre has been so dead lately (pun intended.)

It's a fun combination of filmed role playing, with the director acting
like a Dungeon Master tossing unexpected things at the actors, and
creating a story through creative editing.

Women fainted in the aisles during the premier of "King Kong" back in
1933. (Imagine what kind of medical trauma you could cause with a copy
of the new version and a time machine.)
