Don't know if anybody even reads this NG anymore, but Marty just got
another Best Director Oscar nomination for "The Departed", and is up
against Clint Eastwood again (for "Letters from Iwo Jima"); the other
Director nominees are Alejandro González Iñárritu for "Babel", Stephen
Frears for "The Queen" and Paul Greengrass for "United 93".
"The Departed" was also nominated for Best Picture, Mark Wahlberg for
Supporting Actor, William Monahan for Adapted Screenplay and Thelma
Schoonmaker for Editing. The complete list of Oscar nominees is at:

i hope Marty & "The Departed" win, but the way everyone was clapping
for Clint & his film made me think he's the frontrunner again. not
that "Iwo Jima" isn't good (it's very good), but i thought "The
Departed" was better overall.

i told some friends a while back that Wahlberg gave an Oscar-worthy
performance, and they didn't believe me. <obNelsonMuntz>: ha ha!

I haven't seen "Iwo Jima" yet but I did hear it was really good. I'm
rooting for Marty and "The Departed", too; there's talk that this
might be the year he finally wins, but then people were saying the
same thing about GONY and The Aviator so I'm not going to get all
worked up about it!

Wahlberg really was good, I was pretty impressed. I was rather
surprised Jack Nicholson didn't get nominated, but maybe the voters
thought Wahlberg was better since his role wasn't as flashy as
Nicholson's! (like maybe that's why Mare Winningham was nominated for
her role in "Georgia" but Jennifer Jason Leigh wasn't)

i can't figure out why Jack or Leo or even Alec Baldwin didn't get
nominated (although Leo got nominated for Blood Diamond, right?).
