There is a common misconception circulating about Jamie Foxx and the
singing/playing in the Ray Charles bio-pic.

Jamie Foxx actually did his own singing and playing as Ray in the
off-stage sequences and on a couple of songs. He was so good at it
that the effect is seamless when they morph into Ray's actual
recordings. In fact, one of the reasons Taylor Hackford brought him to
Ray Charles and was given such a stamp of approval by the man himself
was Foxx's outstanding musicianship. There is even footage of Ray
Charles and Jamie Foxx in the studio when they were first introduced
and play together (now included in the DVD supplemental material); Ray
is just blown away by Jamie and how quickly he picks up very tricky
piano licks that would daunt lesser musicians. It's a sublime moment.
Jamie Foxx grew up playing gospel piano, was musical director of his
Baptist church by age thirteen, and received a classical piano
scholarship to university. Jamie Foxx can play rings around most folk
on piano and he can do a dead-on reproduction of Ray Charles'
singing---he even gave another glimpse of it when he lapsed into a bit
of "What'd I Say" during his Oscar acceptance speech.

A good example of how smoothly Jamie Foxx's vocal and piano work is
integrated into the film is the scene where he is shown writing "Hit
The Road, Jack" while arguing with his mistress. Everything during
that scene is played and sung by Jamie Foxx, then--moments later--the
film jumps to the stage performance which uses Ray Charles' original
recording. There are few examples in all of film history, including
Joaquin Phoenix's vocals as Johnny Cash, in which such a juxtaposition
of the actor's voice with the original would have been possible
without jarring the audience. That is only one of the reasons that
Foxx's performance is so great.

The current popular distortion regarding Jamie Foxx's singing and
playing in the biography of Ray Charles needs to be put to rest once
and for all. He was every bit as good at portraying his subject
musically and vocally as Joaquin Phoenix...in fact, Jamie Foxx was
better. He was so good that most folks still think it's all the real
Ray Charles playing and singing throughout the film, when it is not.

Off-topic.

Films remain current for three years.

I can relate. I've spent way too much time in airports this past
year.

Oh... and btw... the Foxx info 6 messages ago is indeed cool, and does
correct my misconception, and raises my appreciation of his performance
(...as I'm guessing you intended).

Oh and I'll second that, I have seen (well heard) Mr. Fox do his thing
a cappella and you can tell he has an ear all right.

I haven't yet heard his whole album he just put out; I'm not quite
impressed with his original material, perhaps he will grow and mature
some more in the future.

Well, unless you keep running into Cillian Murphy and your seat is next
to him on the plane, things aren't so bad, no? Wink
