From our continued turtle-paced inspection of the idea of moving west notion.
We'll soon be out there for some days to do some face time and learn more.
Doing location or studio audio in San Francisco -- IATSE or not, if so which
local? Any other options?
Thanks,
Ty Ford

Phil Perkins (or any other current Bay Area residents) should
certainly jump in and correct me if I'm wrong, but every time I've
looked into it the only real consistent work option in film in SF is
documentaries -- in my experience, they rarely get involved with the
union because the crew is so small and the hours so unpredictable. I
don't know what kind of a foothold IATSE has on the ENG work out in SF
-- I'm sure they control the feature and episodic world out there, but
in my (not incredibly recent) experience those jobs are few and far
between in San Fran.

We have a kind of oddball setup w/ the IA in SF. Local 16, an old
stagehands local, also covers grip, electric, props, art, script, hair
and MU (I think), wardrobe and sound. There used to be some sort of
arrangement with both the LA camera and editorial unions wherby the
local work and P+W went thru Local 16; with the advent of Locals 600
and 700 that is over. So we don't have separate craft locals per se.
What gets done under union contracts (in my experience) in SF is
feature films of all sizes and shapes, commercials (via PR companies)
and anything that shoots in a union theatre or venue. Many local
sound people are actually members of 695, so that they can work in LA
on union shows. I'm not sure how that affects their work on movies
shot here, exactly. Some of us have our own companies that have
contracts w/ Local 16 that cover all our work, since so much of the
rest of the local stuff is non-union, at least directly.
