Hi all,
This is my first post and i am hoping that i can get some advice.
I have a mountain of vinyl records and my old stereo amplifier has just
died. I used to route my DVD player through the same amp so that i could
have the big sound not only when playing vinyl but when watching DVD
movies, listening to CD's, cassette tapes and even Playstation. All
achieved with a multi-way switching box. Now is all dead and gone.
Problem, what to buy to replace? Another stereo amplifier with built-in
AM FM tuner? Perhaps an AV receiver suitable for 5.1 surround sound? Has
anyone got any thoughts or advice?
Thanking you all in advance.
Zeb.

Hello majaev,
I think you first need to decide whether you want surround sound or
not.
This will mean having 5 speakers and maybe a subwoofer.
If you have the room for this then a home theatre receiver could be a
clever
purchase. You can purchase extra speakers later on when you have the
funds.
The receiver will have a digital input for your dvd player and your
play station.
Your other equipment will connect to the analogue inputs and you will
be able
to do without your multi-way switching box. If you don't have a large
room and don't
play at extremely loud levels. Then I suggest looking at some of the
these brands,
Yamaha, Denon, Marantz, Harman Kardon, Onkyo, Pioneer.
If surround sound is not for you then a strereo receiver will still
look after you but I dont
think they have digital inputs for your dvd and play station.

Please ignore this sentence,
" If you don't have a large room and don't
play at extremely loud levels".
I was going somewhere with it but didn't finish.
It's not important and has nothing to do with those brands.

then take a walk through any retailer like hardly normal or clive
peeters , 500 will get a useable amp . you need to think about quality
power required and inputs/outputs . |

Thanks Dezza.
Having the surround sound option would be a bonus.
I had a quick look at JB Hi Fi today and it seemed as though for $500
or so i would be able to get something that would do it all. Seems like
a home theatre receiver will give me more flexibility than a purely
stereo amplifier, so that is probably the way to go. I have speakers in
multiple locations around the house and yard so having a speakers A & B
option sounds good, A for surround sound and B for stereo? Maybe a
splitter on B so i can change the stereo location?

If you want a quick cheap option to give you more time to make a
decision, I have a second hand Sherwood 5.1 AV receiver that I am not
using that you can have for $120. It will do what you want, is good
quality and will give you an entry into AV. Email me at
danteryan.RemoveThis@hotmail.com if interested and I can give you some more
details. Model is RVD-6095R if you want to google it and get some info.
