Fascinating article on how gangster movies reflect American capitalist
interests.

Fascinating if you haven't read much about gangster pictures. Nothing really
original in it.

There's something in the human psyche that wants to glorify the outlaw;
something that's probably based on a realization that the respectable people
in power don't consider your well-being a high priority. A desire to just do
what you want to do and take what you want to take probably has something to
do with it, as well.

It has, of course, little bearing in reality. The outlaws don't consider
your well-being a high priority, either. But perhaps the need for this
fantasy says something positive about human nature--that there's a streak of
rebelliousness in all of us.
