Warner Unveils Complete Details on Kubrick Blu-ray, HD DVD Titles

Warner Home Video has unveiled full details for the Blu-ray and HD DVD
editions of the Stanley Kubrick collection, which will include a host of
newly-produced supplemental features.

As originally announced in late July, Warner will be debuting a quartet
of Kubrick classics day-and-date on standard-def DVD, Blu-ray and HD DVD
October 23.

Included in the collection will be '2001: A Space Odyssey,' 'A Clockwork
Orange,' 'Eyes Wide Shut' and 'The Shining,' each of which will be
making their first-ever appearances on high-def in single-disc editions
that will mirror the special features found on their two-disc
standard-def counterparts.

Warner will also debut a 'Deluxe Edition' of 'Full Metal Jacket' with
new bonus materials, replacing the movie-only next-gen versions that the
studio originally released in 2006.

'2001: A Space Odyssey' will feature audio commentary with stars Keir
Dullea and Gary Lockwood, plus an audio-only interview with Stanley
Kubrick. Video materials include the Channel 4 documentary "2001: The
Making of a Myth" and five all-new featurettes -- "Standing on the
Shoulders of Kubrick: The Legacy of 2001," "Vision of a Future Passed:
The Prophecy of 2001," "2001: A Space Odyssey - A Look Behind the
Future," "2001: FX and Early Conceptual Artwork" and "Look: Stanley
Kubrick!"

'A Clockwork Orange' boasts audio commentary by Malcolm McDowell and
historian Nick Redman, the Channel 4 documentary "Still Tickin': The
Return of Clockwork Orange," and the new featurettes " Great Bolshy
Yarblockos!: Making A Clockwork Orange" and "O Lucky Malcolm!"

'Eyes Wide Shut' will feature both the R and Unrated versions of the
film, audio commentary by Sydney Pollack and historian Peter Loewenberg,
the Channel 4 documentary "The Last Movie: Stanley Kubrick and Eyes Wide
Shut," the "Lost Kubrick: The Unfinished Films of Stanley Kubrick"
featurette, a 1998 DGA D.W. Griffith Award acceptance speech by Kubrick,
and ported over from the previous standard-def DVD release of 'Eyes Wide
Shut,' an interview gallery with Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman and Steven
Spielberg.

'The Shining' scares up an audio commentary by historians Garrett Brown
and John Baxter, the original 1980 "The Making of the Shining"
documentary (with optional commentary by Vivian Kubrick) and three new
featurettes -- "View from the Overlook: Crafting the Shining," "The
Visions of Stanley Kubrick" and "Wendy Carlos, Composer."

Finally, the re-issued 'Full Metal Jacket: Deluxe Edition' includes
audio commentary by stars Adam Baldwin, Vincent D'Onofrio, R. Lee Ermey
and Jay Cocks, and the "Full Metal Jacket: Between Good and Evil"
featurette.

Each release will also include the original theatrical trailer for the
film it presents.

Note that Warner is currently planning to release each of the five
Kubrick films as stand-alone Blu-ray/HD DVD editions, and not as a box
set collection. There will, however, be a packaged version on
standard-def DVD, which will include a bonus disc with the documentary
'Stanley Kubrick: A Life Pictures.' p>

Warner has set a $28.95 suggested list price for the Blu-ray and HD DVD
versions of each Kubrick title.

Wow, fantastic news, and to say that some of the extras sound intriguing
would be a colossal understatement. Not sure how I feel about John Baxter
doing commentary on The Shining. As I recall, the family wasn't too thrilled
with his book.

I'm also not sure what it says about this newsgroup that your post has
generated nary a peep. Apparently they're all "busy" with something else.

A previous post about the DVDs explained this.

I'm VERY sure what it says about this newsgroup when a poster couldn't
even be bothered to notice that news of these DVD releases has already
been posted here, REPEATEDLY ... Have you Alzheimers, or do you just
suffer from short-term memory loss?

Are you referring to your post where you stated that the doco's had been
contracted to small companies? Yes, I read that. I'm not sure how this
"explains" my statement that I'm not sure how I feel about it.

By "repeatedly", you're probably referring to a couple of posts that
appeared in the last couple of weeks, with near zero response, and lacking
details about the DVD extras, which have only just been revealed in this
thread. To near zero response.

There's a power struggle going on here Philip to see which amongst us (well,
"them") holds the key to Kubrick's secrets. Some follow the holey shoe.
Others prefer the divine inspiration that comes from drinking of The Gourd.
Each knows he holds the one truth.
Whatyagonnado?

I must admit I was very excited when I saw those specs & extras and for the
first time I considered buying (and decided I would buy) into one hd format
or the other by October of this year. I'll probably buy a pc drive to begin
with instead of risking money on a potential white-elephant when one or the
other format dies.

Vivian's documentary on the making of The Shining (with optional commentary
no less!) is probably reason enough for me to buy that, but it looks like
there are plenty more extras on that disc and on all the others to safely
guarantee my cash.

The abscence of Barry Lyndon annoys me a lot, but I hope they rectify that
in the next year or so. Maybe that's why they're not releasing them as a
boxset on hd?
Once Lolita and BL follow they'll no doubt put them out again as a set.

lol. I didn't mean to upset anybody! I honestly didn't notice any
previous posts on the forthcoming HD-DVD and Blu Ray versions.

Yup busy making a living. However, I'll wait and see what the reviews say.
To be honest I'm dying to see the Kubrick Archives at Elephant & Castle in
London. That will be the ultimate 'extras' edition.
