'Movies & Music on the Lawn' returns to BR Gallery with ‘Familiar
Faces’ theme

One of Baton Rouge Gallery’s popular programs, Movies & Music on the
Lawn, will kick off this year’s series at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 30.

The year’s theme, “Familiar Faces,” will focus on beloved and well-
known stories in silent film versions not as well known.

Most movie fans know the 1939 Wizard of Oz film starring Judy Garland.
Baton Rouge Gallery’s Movies & Music on the Lawn won’t be showing that
film. Instead, it will show the first adaptation on film based on the
book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum.

This 1925 comedy version of The Wizard of Oz depicts the iconic story
of a Kansas girl in an enchanted world of wonder. The film has a
completely different plot, set in the magical Land of Oz, from the
book.

The plot focuses mainly on the character of the Scarecrow, played by
director Larry Semon. Dorothy is played by Dorothy Dawn. Dawn’s
version of the farm girl is an 18-year-old caught in a love triangle
between the Scarecrow and the Tin Man, played by a young Oliver Hardy
of the comedy team Laurel and Hardy.

The Tin Man and Lion are actually not characters but are disguised
farmhands who find themselves swept up by a tornado to the mythical
Land of Oz. With an intriguing story and stunning special effects,
this version of the classic story will delight kids of all ages.
As always with Movies & Music on the Lawn, live musicians will
accompany the silent film with both rehearsed and improvisational
material sure to enhance the experience.

This installment will feature the musical style of The Zeelanders
Group.

Admission is $5 to all non-gallery members and includes free popcorn.
Baton Rouge Gallery members will be admitted free.

Other movies scheduled in the “Familiar Faces” series are The Mark of
Zorro, June 27; Peter Pan, July 25; The Phantom of the Opera, Aug 29;
Tarzan, Sept 26; and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Oct 31.

Was TWOO chosen because of its title?

Why did Larry Semon title it after the
classic children's book if he intended
to trash the proceedings?

Oliver Hardy was justifiably famous
because he paid his dues working
in Larry Semon comedies.

Featured with the other classics, the familiar
phrase "from the sublime to the ridiculous"
surely applies here.
