Hi,

I've just installed etch, but I have no sound. I've tried googling and
looking at list archives, but I'm not sure what needs to be done. I'm
pretty new to Linux. I added snd-powermac to my /etc/modules and now
the master volume seems to be registering but still no output. When I
run Amarok it says that xine cannot find a sound driver. I'm not sure
what I need or don't need to have installed and I'd rather not just
start blindly installing alsa packages. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Bob

I just recently installed etch on my laptop as well. Although this one is a
PowerBook G4. Sound worked out of the box without configuring. However, I did
have the issue of sound on my desktop with etch. So I just ran the following
commands.

Install 'alsa-base' and recommended packages from aptitude.
* need to run sudo alsaconf to configure sound drivers and alsamixer to adjust.

This should do the trick. If you have any more PPC related questions do feel to
post. I will be watching this list.

Good Luck,
Amit

I already had alsa-base installed, running alsaconf and restarting
solved it. Thanks, for the advice!

Just for the info, in case it helps diagnose something.

When I first installed Etch my gnome volume icon was on mute and could
not be changed. I then added snd-powermac to my modules and the icon
worked (which I assume is what you are refering to as the master
volume control in alsa). With this setup I thought sound was working,
but when I ran Amarok it said that xine could not find a sound driver.
That's when I posted to the list and it was recommended that I run
alsaconf, which seemed to load a driver for powermac sound. Anyways,
sound seems to be working now, I can run Amarok and listen to music so
I'm happy. Thanks for the help.
