| Hello, does anyone know if there are any NEW servers out there that
use the old pci 32 bit 5volt cards and work with rh3. I talk to hp and
I was told that they only support rh4.

And even then I don't think the current HP (or anyone's?) x86-based
servers go back to 32-bit PCI, only PCI-X, which IIRC only goes as far
back as 64-bit PCI. But my knowledge of PCI-X's PCI compatability is
pretty sketchy.

FWIW "support" and "works" are not synonyms in HPspeak:
Supported, known to work -> warm fuzzies all around
Supported, not known to not work -> an HPite may be in trouble
Supported, known to not work -> an HPite is in trouble
Unsupported, known to work -> lucky today, unlucky tomorrow?
Unsupported, not known to not work -> there but for the grace of Turing
Unsupported, known to not work -> no, it was not deliberate

Which RH2 are we talking about?

1. I only know of PCI-X and PCIe in new machines. PCI-X is 64-bit,
but it's backward compatible with PCI, which is 32-bit. Both
PCI-X and PCIe are 3.3V only, though. For whatever purpose you
keep an ancient card around, it's time to plan a migration path.
Otherwise your only option is to shop at used computer stores.
2. HP providing maintenance support is different from RH providing
software that runs. Which do you mean? RHEL3 is planned for EOL
October 2010. RHEL4 EOL is 2012. Start planning that migration,
too. |

Well, PCI was either 32 or 64 bit, and either 33 or 66 MHz, and either
3.3v or 5.0v, where some combinations of those were possible, and some
not.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conventional_PCI
This link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI-X
confirms (to the extent that anything from wikipedia can I guess
that PCI-X indeed only speaks 3.3v. So, the OP's 5.0v PCI card is an
orphan as far as plugging it into a PCI-X slot goes.
If buying a "new" system, apart from migrating to another card card as
suggested above, the only other option I can see if the card is indeed
unique would be to find some vendor offering a PCI-X or PCIe to PCI
bridge solution to an external PCI chassis. For that some web
searching might be fruitful, but again, will probably run into the
differences between "works" and "supported." Or at least who provides
"support."
