I modprobe'd pcspkr and raised the "PC Speaker" volume with alsamixer,
but I still can't get the classic "bell" from the console or from xterm.

Anyone know what else is needed?

TIA...

It's not about the hardware: it used to work on RHEL.

Duh... it turns out that raising a level in alsamixer does not "unmute"
that channel (press 'm' to toggle channel on/off). OK!

A speaker?

I can't help but wonder if they bother with the speaker in recent
computers, given an expectation that most people will have external
speakers.

Many (most?) new computers do not have the little speaker any more.
Quite irritating to me. The console beep is a "must have" for me. There
are ways around it, but it just doesn't sound the same. Bastards.

I noticed that with the used computer I jes acquired. Not hearing the
POST beep freaks me out.

I don't know. I've actually gone so far and switched off the beeping. I
use tab far too often and it gets on other people's nerves. Try doing
that in a library and you'll know what I mean. Usually I know what's
going on without the additional beeping. Which, in fact, has to be
compiled into the kernel. There are very few cases where the speaker
control of the sound card actually does anything.

Its been quite a while since I've done a build as I've moved on almost
completely to laptops. Do most of the newest motherboards still have the
PC speaker jumper? Do most cases still have a PC speaker?

I agree. The post-POST "beep" is always re-assuring.

Try

# /sbin/modprobe pcspkr

or delete a hash before this line in /etc/rc.d/rc.modules.

You may also want to use

# set bell-style audible

(man bash)

Mikhail
