When I install RHEl 5.5 (32bit) on Dell Optplex 755, the installation
always hangs somewhere before the real file installation starts. I
check the installation log in the Ctrl-Alt-F2 console and I see
something like the following when the installation hangs (it hangs,
but never gives error)
<4>end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 196688
<3>Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logic block 49172
<3>Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logic block 49172
<6>ata2: EH completed
<3>ata2.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x6 frozen
<3>ata2.00: cmd a0/00:00 etc etc etc
It seems to be bad dvd drive. But this machine comes with windows.
and I can copy all the files out of the redhat EL5.5 installation disc
(I tried with xcopy /V /S to make sure the data is copied
correctly).
If the CD drive works fine under windows, that should mean that
hardware is good and the cd disc is good.
Any comment? Thanks. |

Bill,
Did you do a media scan at the begin of the anaconda run? Did anaconda
accept the DVD?
Point to consider, only Optiplex GX270 and GX280N where certified for
RHEL, and then the GX270 only RHEL 3 under a certain condition.
So it works with Windows and xcopy works is not a valid test.
It is not Certified or "community said to be compatible".
There is no proof it should work based on info on Red Hat's hardware
catalog
https://hardware.redhat.com/list.cgi?product=Red%20Hat%20Hardware%20Ce...ficatio
So if anaconda's media scan cannot find errors on your DVD, your DVD
device might not be 100% compatible with anaconda or RHEL 5.5 at all.
It is also impossible to order a Dell Optiplex 755 with RHEL installed
or with RHEL DVD's from the Dell outlet site for refurbished hardware.
So maybe Dell also has issues with the combination Dell Optiplex 755 and
RHEL.
Kind regards,
Jan Gerrit Kootstra |
