Has anyone set up a pptp vpn connecting to a samba server?

I set one up yesterday and it works - some of the time. Sometimes it
works fine and you can see the samba shares in xp or vista, but
sometimes you can't (on the same computer), even though the vpn connects ok.

I guess i should explain the setup a bit better...

It's a Ubuntu server behind a zyxel modem/router, with the pptp port
being NAT'ed from the router to the server. The VPN is using the same
subnet as the LAN - but a different address range. The server's running
pptpd and samba. Accessing the windows shares works consistently from
within the LAN, but it seems unreliable via the VPN.

Any thoughts?
