Hi,
will openSUSE 11.1 work with a new P55 based mainboard and the new
Core-i7 850 CPU?
Regards,
Detlev

Have you tried putting in an openSUSE 11.1 Live CD and tried to boot from it?

It will most likely support the CPU. As for the mainboard: This will
depend on the detailed component specifications (NIC, graphics, SATA-
controller) and can be tested most easily, as already mentioned, with a
test installation. I remember to be quite unhappy with OpenSuSE at the
time when we had the first machines with Intel Q35. 10.3 did run only
with ACPI disabled. These problems tend to settle as the chipset get more
common and distributions get updated.
A little search in the web results in this article:
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=intel_p55&num=4
"So what works and what doesn't with the Intel P55 and Lynnfield
processors when it comes to Linux? Well, we have just had the hardware
for about a week, but so far the experience is relatively pleasant after
first sorting out a few issues. When it comes to the Intel P55
motherboard we tested, the Intel DP55KG, the motherboard had worked with
Ubuntu 9.04 and its Linux 2.6.28 kernel except for the Gigabit Ethernet
adapter was not detected. When upgrading to Ubuntu 9.10 Alpha 5 with the
Linux 2.6.31 kernel, the network adapter was now supported."
If in doubt I would go for a Core 2 Duo CPU and a mainboard with an older
chipset like P45. Installing an early version of 11.2 might also be worth
considering in case 11.1 does not work.

I've got an i7 in an Asus mainboard and 11.1 works just fine.
There's no real reason why it should not. 11.1 sees 8 CPU's,
four double threaded cores, which is exactl right.
