....I realise this may be peripheral to firewalls, but I run a Debian
firewall, which also provides a few other services. For a long time i
also ran ntop on it to see what was happening. Since updating to 4.0
it seems that ntop is running but there is no data being collected.
What simple thing have I overlooked?

simple run ntop manually and see log... for example my problem:

tomfi# ntop
Mon May 21 19:27:20 2007 ntop will be started as user nobody
Mon May 21 19:27:20 2007 ntop v.3.0 SourceForge .tgz MT (SSL)
Mon May 21 19:27:20 2007 Configured on Jan 30 2005 22:53:02, built on
Jan 30 2005 22:53:23.
Mon May 21 19:27:20 2007 Copyright 1998-2004 by Luca Deri <deri.DeleteThis@ntop.org>
Mon May 21 19:27:20 2007 Get the freshest ntop from http://www.ntop.org/
Mon May 21 19:27:20 2007 Initializing ntop
Mon May 21 19:27:20 2007 Checking eth0 for additional devices
Mon May 21 19:27:20 2007 Resetting traffic statistics for device eth0
Mon May 21 19:27:20 2007 DLT: Device 0 [eth0] is 1, mtu 1514, header 14
Mon May 21 19:27:20 2007 Initializing gdbm databases
Mon May 21 19:27:20 2007 Now running as requested user 'nobody'
(65534:65534)
Mon May 21 19:27:20 2007 **FATAL_ERROR** ....open of
/var/lib/ntop/prefsCache.db failed: File open error
Mon May 21 19:27:20 2007 1. Is another instance of ntop running?
Mon May 21 19:27:20 2007 2. Make sure that the use you specified can
write in the target directory
tomfi# ls -ls /var/lib/ntop/prefsCache.db
14 -rw-r--r-- 1 ntop ntop 12849 May 2 2006 /var/lib/ntop/prefsCache.db

the row with FATAL_ERROR say something about error opening dbfile .. so
I looked on this file, and I see that file owner is ntop:ntop ... but
ntop runs as user 'nobody'(it is writed on row before the
FATAL_ERROR)... so there is my problem ... for example Smile

It seems that I restarted ntop and it started recording information.
There was a process but it seems not have done anything. We wait for
the next reboot, when there is a new kernel.....
