Hi,

I've got the CD for Lenny, but no CD-ROM.
So I used a public box to copy the CD contents to
a USBstik. But my box can't USB-boot.

So then I tried to use the public [Win] box to install
via the CD to my USBstick. But the stick's free partition
of 800MB filled up before the installation completed,
although I [tried to] chose the minimum installation.

When I copy the USBstick's contents to an IDE partition
and patch my Grub accordingly, Lenny only goes into
'installation' mode, using ram-disk, and I can't even
mount anything. But I notice that it spends a long time
looking for a CDrom.

So if I buy a 'DVD player with USB & CD ripping'
[as the Philips 3360 blurb describes], will lenny find
this and continue to complete the installation ?

It doesn't justify buying a CDrom for my old box,
but I can give the DVD player to my ex, if it plays
DVDs to a standard TV. Does it ?

Thanks for any advice.

Sorry Dude.. I think u didn't read the description properly Wink It can rip
AUDIO-CDs or -DVDs to .mp3 and store them onto an USB-Stick. Probably it
won't read the Lenny-CD Wink

Try the thing with the Floppy [if u CAN] or install a CD- or DVD-Drive
for this installation.

Shifting the hard drive into another PC for a minimal installation and
then putting it back into the target machine might be another
possibility. All this depends on the hardware, of course.

I have done this method using Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10 minimal install
putting Linux on a USB 4GB disk. Then I can boot onto my notebook from
using that USB stick. Why not try a different Linux release? I also
preconfigured the USB stick using the UBCD "ultimate boot CD"
partition magic tools. Setting the first partion as 100-mb /boot /
ext2. Second partition as 2GB /root /ext3. and third partion as /fat32
data. You can get the Ultimate boot CD from http://www.ultimatebootcd.com
which ports to USB as long as you preconfigure the USB as a boot
device. If you don't have a CD-drive then download HP's tools for
formating the USB Storage formate tool V2.0.6. (Sorry nolink) Take
note that some USB latency can be as long as 30-seconds. Some MB allow
reseting this time (in BIOS look 4 USB Mass storage Rest Options) The
guide I have here says to select the highest value and the decrease it
until problem is cleared. de.doughboy DeleteThis @gmail.com
