When I center the screen on my ViewSonic monitor using Windows XP, it
is off center by 1/8 inch on the left when using Linux. The monitor,
USB keyboard and USB mouse are shared by a Windows computer and a
Linux computer via a KVM switch. The problem persists no matter what
Linux distro I use. Is there a solution in the xorg configuration
files? I look forward to your suggestions.

One solution would be to center the screen in Linux, then this would be a
Windows problem with 1/8 inch off Smile

However, as I don't know how to solve the Windows problem I will instead
suggest a Linux solution:

It would probably help to write a custom mode line with timings adjusted
to center the image on your monitor. There is a program called xvidtune
that can help you find a good modeline. There is a very good description
of this at http://howto-pages.org/ModeLines/

Does your monitor have an auto-position feature?

if you're using the positioner on the monitor, it'll do a different
position for each card. depending on which is the easier driver level
positioner, well, put the monitor position dead centre, adjust it for
linux, then use the driver positioner in windows to follow. as someone
mentioned, it becomes a windows problem, and the video card drivers
often have all kinds of twiddle features to ameliorate the deficiencies
in windows itself.
