Just curious,
I have the "opertunity" to get two Alpha server for pretty much free
one is
a ES40, 4xCPU/833Mhz, 32 GB RAM, KZPCC, 6x18GB, 28x36GB drives and
the other is a DS20E 2x5000Mhz CPUs, KZPCC, 2 GB RAM.
Has anyone converter a ES40 to linux, and is it worth it being such a
power
hog ?

The ES40 especially is well worth it. That thing will scream along,
especially if you recompile stuff with the Compaq compilers. There have
been installation successes of eg AlphaCore.
If you don't need the quad-cpu performance of the ES40, I'd put the disk
farm on the DS20e and run that as the main box (but since when do alpha
freaks worry about electricity consumption - winter is coming up, just
save money on your gas heating bill!)
In our farm, a DS20e is rated at approx 25,000 transactions per second,
with the ES40 coming in at approx 130,000 transactions per second.

if any of them doesn't work for you,
i'll be happy to ... help you getting rid of it
if i ever get a computer like the ES40 you describe,
i don't think i'll ever need any other computer for a whiiiiile...
sound mastering, 3D rendering, etc, everything would
finally run smooth and fast.
glups....

Hi, I have here an ES40 with similar configuration (but only one CPU).
I've successfully installed Gentoo Linux with a recent kernel and it
runs pretty well, compiiling everything from scratch. The only thing to
be aware of is the CFLAGS setting for gcc:
-mieee -mcpu=ev67 -Wa,-mev6
