Hi,

I'm using Debian 4.0 rev 0, and need to install GTK2 libraries. The software
I want to install requires this, and I have no idea what to do!

I've tried:
apt-get install gtk+-devel

but the error message I receive is:
Need to install Gnome-common from Gnome CVS

I'm completely baffled! Please help. Thanks!

Not a good sign.

That won't work. There's no such package in Debian. Maybe you meant

apt-get install libgtk2.0-dev

According to http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages, stable contains
libgtk2.0-dev version 2.8.20-7, testing and unstable version
2.10.13-1, and experimental version 2.11.5-1.

Looks like you've got old code, if it is muttering on about CVS:

WARNING: GNOME has moved from CVS to SVN. The old CVS respository
is still accessible, however it does not contain any source code
changes made after 31 Dec 2006.

Source: http://developer.gnome.org/tools/cvs.html

You're over your head. Waaaaaaaay over your head. Are you a developer,
or want to become one? if not, I would recommend stopping now. If yes,
then you need to be aware that you're going to have to make a serious
investment in time and learning to get the hang of it.

And if you have to build gnome-common from a development branch,
you'll pretty much have to rebuild the entire GNOME environment from
that branch.

What, exactly, are you trying to build that is so cutting edge, and
why do you want it?

In the mean time, try some light reading.

http://developer.gnome.org/tools/cvs.html
http://developer.gnome.org/tools/svn.html
http://svn.gnome.org/

Pay particular attention to this warning:

Before getting started, it is useful to remember a key point about
GNOME Subversion - it is a developer's work space and has no
guarantees that a given project will build right out of the box,
or indeed, not dump core on start up.

Best of luck.

Do what it says. I'm surprised that a standard Debian source package
would say this, but it's telling you to go upstream to the CVS
repository at gnome.org (or wherever the latest development version of
gnome is located).

I demand that Debian_Newbie may or may not have written...

Hmm? The error should be "couldn't find package gtk+-devel"...

It helps to use the right package names Wink

(You may find "apt-cache search" to be of use.)

If things appear to be going better, you've overlooked something.
