At this moment I use Kubuntu 9.04
Sometimes I read that Kubuntu is a bad KDE implementation.
So I wonder what is considered a good KDE distro, and what are the
differences with Kubuntu ?

Does it work for you?

If so then keep it and don't worry so much about what you read

It is a matter of taste. Gnome users think KDE is a bad implementation.
At the time of Kubuntu 9.04 I thought felt it was the best release of
KDE.

Good is what works best for you. Latest release of KDE is around 4.3.1.
Guessing you are running something like 4.2.2

Go to http://distrowatch.com/, check each distribution and see which
one has 4.3.1 ready for Official Release with a 2.6.31 kernel.

None of them will, since as of this writing, the latest kernel release is
2.6.30.5.

Silly.

For me its PCLinuxOS, which runs KDE 3.5 instead of 4.X. The reason for my
preference is simple, it works on my test machine (a Gateway GT 5220). Few
pass the test.

Then there is the much better tool kit PCLinuxOS gets from its Mandriva
source.

Finally, the killer. If your wireless card is not supported by the default
drivers, getting NDIS up and running is any Ubuntu distro is less than
straigh forward. Or it was the last time I looked.

My own personal preference is to use gnome, but since you asked - the
last time I used kde much was a year or two ago on Ubuntu - no, not
kubuntu. It was my experience that things worked more nicely with a
Ubuntu install followed by adding the kde desktop - I've read similar
advice from other folks - that would be my recommendation.

Perhaps, but we all were at sometime ourselves

For the OP, the biggest differences are in how easy they are to setup and
how they are organized. In addition hardware recognition can become a
factor. As an example my desktop runs PCLinuxOS just fine but Mepis 8.0
gives random restarts. Yet on my laptop Mepis gives far better wireless
connectivity than does PCLinuxOS.

Since we all have slightly different hardware perhaps the best thing is
to determine for yourself which is best. Burn a few Live-CD's for
initial comparison purposes. Then as long as your root and home are
separate partitions you can fully install while preserving the integrity
of the data files.

Perhaps. Don't be so hard on yourself.

True (sort of), but the difference is that some people (like the OP) are
destined to never get beyond that stage. They just don't try, or simply
can't understand what's going on.

I'm not sure what that means. KDE is KDE. They're, no doubt, running their
own theme for look & feel but the actual software most likely hasn't been
altered from the original source.

Tried Ubuntu-9.10 with kde-4.3 and Mandriva Cooker (KDE4.3 as well).
Both distributions have almost the same look at the kde surface, some
differences in toolsets, but both basically work just fine.
Stay with your preferred one, or follow the bleeding edge with a 2nd
install Smile

In the mean time I did some additional googling.
If I understand correctly, it boils down to
- how many packages in the repo's
- aim for stability (conservative packaging)
- bleeding edge

At this moment Kubuntu works well for me except for regular crashes of
Kontact, the KDE pim application.

I am tempted by Arch which seems to be very bleeding edge and
also has a continuous update policy as soon as there is something new,
instead of release updates on fixed times.

Any thoughts on Arch concerning hardware detection compared to Kubuntu ?
