Hi,
I have an alphastation 200 running linux. I wanted to install a
gigabit nic in the card. I tried the intel gigabit card and the d-link
gigabit nic card. Neither card would function. Does anyone know of a
gigabit nic that will work with this computer with Linux?
I use debian etch with a 2.6.x kernel.
Thanks,
Alan |

Are you using AlphaBIOS or SRM? If the latter, does either card show up
properly if you do a SHOW SYSTEM from the >>> prompt? |

okay.
d-link card did not show up at all. 530T was the model. I returned
that to the store yesterday.
intel i82540EM 1000BASE-T Ethernet, rev. 2
shows up in devices and the driver loads without errors. However,
there is no network connection. It says cable is disconnected. I have
checked the cable with cable tester and tried several different
cables. Of interest this card will not work in any old pentium pro
systems I have around. I suspect something is not compatible. At least
in the alpha the card is seen.
Okay. I installed intel card in powermac beige g3 (very old mac). It
works perfectly. Go figure! The d-link card would not work in any old
pci based computers I have.
I guess the question is what pci 1000Base-T cards work in older pci
systems. I have read some information and most of the newer 1000Base-T
cards require pci 2.2 specs. Don't have a clue what pci specs these
systems use.
I guess it is time to throw this stuff away ).
Thanks,
Alan

I doubt the CPU in that machine would be fast enough to handle that
much traffic anyway.

Sounds about right given that we pretty much saturate a 1.25GHz EV67 if
we push max rates through all 4 ports on a quad 100 NIC. |
