I have yet to see a Linux distribution that allows you to specify a
driver from a USB drive *DURING INSTALLATION*.
Vi$ta had broken the ice, and I think Linux should follow.

WTF? What exactly prevents you to go to console and type "insmod
blahblah.ko" during installation? I was doing it in the last century, only
using floppies and/or network.

You mean to remove the majority of our drivers, and see to that each driver
has to be downloaded from different websites? Sure, thats a great step forward.

No... I meant hardware devices (notably storage chipsets) born after the
kernel was released. Then the kernel would not have their drivers.

Without the need to compile or cross-compile the driver from source
first?
Note that the driver has kernel versions.

Why would I need to compile the driver for? Already have them compiled by the
kernel package maintainer.

You don't say
BTW, so how's that win 2k/xp drivers working on Vista/Win 7? Got any
Creative SB Live sound cards?

But then you could download a precompiled one for your version of the kernel,
especially if you don't usually diverge from the distro kernel. Ubuntu already
does it for non-free drivers like nVidia graphics and wireless chipsets.

Why not take and install a newer release with the new drivers instead of
trying to install RedHat 5.2 on your newly bought Octa Core Intel based
machine, you will benefit that you don't have download every update and even
then end up with an unsupported version.
And by the way, you have always been able to boot install media with another
kernel than the one that comes on the CD, try to run the microsoft installer
with an uptodate microsoft kernel.

Both you and David seemed to suggest instead of adding drivers during
installation, one should wait for a newer distribution that contained
the drivers of your latest and greatest hardware devices....
Well... I think allowing users to add drivers during installation via a
USB drive could be more convenient, and that users would not need to wait.

Why a USB drive and not an NFS mounted drive or a FTP or HTTP server? |

In 99% of the cases you are trying to install an out date version, or would
you think that it would be okey to try to install microsoft vista on the
cutting edge computer you buy 2048?
And still you can boot the install media with a kernel not provided on the
install media.

It's not suited for Linux and we have methods to do similar things and most
distributions has a release cycle of 6 months, which is far shorter time to
wait than what you have to do when you use microsoft, who don't even bother to
fix really serious bugs.

No need to wait for a new kernel. Don't you see, if someone writes a driver
and compiles it against known distro kernel you could add it to a running
kernel. It's the same procedure as in Windows.
The only problem you can see is there are a lot of kernel versions in a small
time frame. Are you saying it's a bad thing to have new things, or should we
wait for 7 years between 2 kernel versions as in XP->Vista situation?
Also, Linux has DKMS so you wouldn't have to whine about recompiling or even
seeing a compiler. Having source code is definitely a plus and only an idiot
would claim otherwise.
