Sorry fo rit being unreadable. My host does not have gcc so I can not
compile anything. They also prevent me from any rpm installs. Probably
time to get a new host.

That's usually sensible, as having a compiler installed makes some
security holes easier to exploit.

> They also prevent me from any rpm installs.

Probably because it's *their* machine, not yours. Just because they
host you does not mean you should be allowed to admin the machine. Not
all customers are qualified for that task, and few usually want it
anyway.

> Probably time to get a new host.

That, or ask them to install it for you. If you can make a good case
for it, they might see it your way.

Killfile Alan Connor, he's a waste of your time.

Indeed he is, but I also don't want him to put off new users. He may
still be reached with reason, though I'm growing less optimistic. I
don't personally care whether he downloads messages or replies to anyone
at all, but to proudly announce the fact is just plain stupid, annoying,
and disruptive to the group. I always get a mental image of a debate
panel with him on it, only he constantly has his fingers in his ears and
loudly goes "... LALALALALALALA, I CAN'T HEAR YOU! LALALALALALALA ..."

I took it to the manager and he explained why. Bu that I could upgrade
accounts for a few days then downgrade again - it's just not on the server
where I am .

Check the software documentation to see what this package depends on.
Well mentioned by others that you are configuring and building the
application. Its not installation like in RPMs or Setup.exe/MSI of
Windows.

I suggest doing (in bash)

../configure > configure.log 2>&1
Check what your configure says, especially at the bottom there might be
warnings and errors. It might also say what errors appeared.

make > make.log 2>&1
will throw a log that can be reviewed further. Some packages use
Fortran and C++; some need "compat" libraries (??) that you might want
to check for.

RPMs are the best, as others suggested. It is also important to find
out where errors occurred during building of a package.
