Dear fellow dselect users

dselect gone crazy

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=545366

And looks like it will take some time before it gets fixed.
this is bad.

What should I do?

- Downgrade dpkg (and dpkg-dev, dependencies) to 1.15.3.1, or

- Stop using dselect and learn aptitude.

My advice would be to go for the second option, but I'm biased.

a) Don't use dselect. It's always been crazy.
b) Don't use Unstable if you can't deal with occasional breakage.

I've downgraded dpkg ... and dselect is working fine now. Thank
you. And sorry for ignoring your advice. I tried aptitude I guess
several times before but never got it.

IMO dselect is neither one thing nor the other. If you want a properly
browseable and searchable tool for looking at packages, use synaptic (or
kpackage on kde). If you want a command-line tool for managing packages, use
apt-get (and associated progs like apt-cache).

Also IMO aptitude falls into this same no-mans-land category, but I know
that aptitude has a loyal following who swear by it.
