Reminds me of a discussion from last week.

Pirillo just doesn't get Linux security. He thinks it's as simple as drive
formatting by any typical user. |

The one I love is when opening an office document it tells me it is
locked by someone else and gives me the opportunity to open it read
only. So I open it read only but when I come to exit it always asks if
I want to save changes even though I haven't made any. Completely brain
dead just like the wintrolls in this newsgroup.

Pirillo has been a Windows support guy for a long time, I'm not
surprised he doesn't know much about linux. Most of the stuff on his
site is written by others.

He has recently grown jealous of Linux.

More latterly he installed the whole Compix/XGL shebang on his wife/fiancee's
laptop and was stunned to realise that it wasn't a resource hog either. I
can't recall how he expressed his feelings, but it was quite the hilarity to
Linux loyalist. Somewhat akin to a scene where someone frantically bangs on
a door and kicks it and then another person calms over calmly and opens it
using the knob. Windows users are used to throwing a lot of brute force at
the problem. Energy is dispensable in a culture of waste and lavish
existence. Needless to mention, there are very few people to whom this
actually translated into profits as opposed to excruciating expenditure. |

I remember reading that. Pirillo isn't dumb, he just lacks experience
with Linux (which is rapidly changing I suspect!). I see most of the
comments on that article are asking about requirements to achieve whats
in that video. I could probably do that on my P4 2.8 with NVidia 5900
without any trouble. Unfortunately Vista probably wont run very well on
this machine. I'll have to get Cedega to run Eve Online, which works
nicely .

That would explain why it thinks there are changes. Another MS
feature. I still say read only should mean read only. Windows is just
full of annoyances IMHO.

Actually, I believe there's a "simple" explanation for this: If your
/default/ settings are not *exactly* the same as the RO document
settings, it is "automatically" formateed to your default settings,
which means it's not the same, which means Word has to ask you whether
the changes made need to be saved. See, elementary!

Yup. So "elementary" knowing that it is pointless to ask that for a RO
document.

Okay... so I tried it. (Truth is that I checked permissions first just
to be sure.) Here's what I got.
C:\>ver
Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
C:\>rmdir WINNT
Access is denied.
C:\>cacls WINNT
C:\WINNT BUILTIN\Users:R
BUILTIN\Users:(OI)(CI)(IO)(special access:)
GENERIC_READ
GENERIC_EXECUTE
BUILTIN\Power Users:C
BUILTIN\Power Users:(OI)(CI)(IO)C
BUILTIN\Administrators:F
BUILTIN\Administrators:(OI)(CI)(IO)F
NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:F
NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:(OI)(CI)(IO)F
BUILTIN\Administrators:F
CREATOR OWNER:(OI)(CI)(IO)F
C:\>bash
bash-3.00$ rm -rf WINNT/
rm: cannot remove `WINNT//0.log': Permission denied
rm: cannot remove `WINNT//Blue Lace 16.bmp': Permission denied
rm: cannot remove `WINNT//bootstat.dat': Permission denied
rm: cannot remove `WINNT//clock.avi': Permission denied
rm: cannot remove `WINNT//cmsetacl.log': Permission denied
....
....
<snip>
If you look at the output from cacls (displays or modifies ACLs) only
Administrators and the system have full control over this directory.
Regular users (BUILTIN\USERS) only have READ and EXECUTE permissions. |

Good for them. This isn't the case on any of my machines. Take the time
to read what I wrote instead of what you think I wrote. You'll see that
I did this on my own machine... and NOT the vast majority of other
machines.

Hi moron,
The vast majority of windows xp users HAVE ADMINISTRATOR PRIVILIGES
