Archived from groups: uk>comp>os>linux (more info?)

Hi all,

Some facts:

-------------------------------------------
Server Name: earth
Server OS: Red Hat ES 4
--
Desktop Name: jupiter
Desktop OS: Fedora 7
--
Notebook Name: NLDBO
Notebook OS: WinXp Sp2
-------------------------------------------

I have just thrown out my WinXp and installed Fedora 7 on my Desktop
PC.
Also I have a little 'home server' which runs 'Red Hat ES 4' and all
our files (of the family) are on here.

I used to connect to the server with WinXP, via Samba, which always
worked fine.

Now I want to connect to the server using my Fedora system. I would
like to: browse directories, copy/paste files, execute (word)
documents and play music/movies from the remote system.

I can access the files on the server via the: 'File Browser' -> 'Go
Network' from my Desktop.
But this process takes almost 10 min. before the File Browser found
the directories.

Isn't there a way that I can make this faster, that I can sort of let
my Desktop system remember what the path to the server is, instead of
searching everytime?

I read on the internet that there are a few options, samba-share, ftp,
scp, mount-point, and all have their pros & cons, which makes it
difficult for me to decide what is the best option now.

Can you tell me what is the fastest, most stable and USER-FRIENDLY way
to setup this permanently?
And also how to set it up, since I am still a beginner with Linux.

Remember the samba-shares are working fine and need stay working also
fine, since other members of the family still use WinXP (for now).

Regards,
Stoeptegeltje

Sounds like NFS might be what you're after:
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-8.0-Manual/custom-guide/ch-nfs.html

Also look for ssh and the fish protocol.

I don't know whether you're using KDE or Gnome desktop -- in Konqueror you
could access the SMB shares using smb://earth or in Nautilus I guess its
similar - the delay is probably your samba client searching for servers
with broadcast. You'll probably want to edit /etc/hosts and add

earth ip.address

unless you've already set up DNS?

You might want to look at installing SSH server (openssh-server) on your
RHEL 4 box and once you've got public key logins working the fish://
protocol will let you access the remote filesystem.
