Spending the last couple weeks configuring my new computer for Windows
Vista, Linux, and FreeBSD has me thinking what they would be like if they
were houses.

Windows Vista: From a distance, it looks like a nice house, but once you
get up to it you realize that everything is fake. Fake stone walkway,
fake marble entrance way, even the grass on the lawn is fake. Pre-
fabricated. Its on a street where all the houses look exactly the same.
If you want to paint, you have to paint the entire house the same color.
Despite being newly pre-fabricated, there is a pest problem because the
neighborhood was build over an old garbage dump. House comes with basic
cheap furniture, which is all wrapped in plastic. Easy to punch holes in
the hollow walls, if not just knock them down completely. New furniture,
even though built just as a cheaply, is expensive.

GNU/Linux: An old Victorian house built out of stone that also has new
modern extensions. Some rooms are very old and dusty, while others are
very modern. All of them have a charm to them though. House was
originally built by the community. House is full of furniture, antiques
and modern. House is also full of art work. The marble entrance way has
real marble. The grass on the lawn is real.

FreeBSD: You arrive to find that only the foundation and framework has
been set. In the backyard, you find pallets of lumber, dry wall,
insulation, shingles, etc.

What about OS X?

OS X: A gingerbread house built around a sturdy frame. You overpay
enormously for someone to finish off the FreeBSD house. You are not
permitted to eat any of the house, no matter how tasty it might be.

.....or how much you paid for it.

Thats definetly the OSX house.

Visited the Solaris house a couple times. At first, you just think you
are on a sunny beach, but then you start noticing weird things and
realize you are on an alien world...

That is what I use on a daily basis at work. I find myself much more
productive on a Linux workstation, *but*, if my life relied on the OS,
I'd take it over a Linux setup.

The way any new cupboards and wardrobes you place in the house
mysteriously merge with the preexisting ones is rather eerie.

Don't trust the new landlord much either.

The BeOS House:
Beautiful Frank Lloyd Wright structure, lovingly restored from old
photos. You'll never have the opportunity to live in it though.
