Archived from groups: linux>redhat>rpm (more info?)

All,

I want to be able to upgrade and patch the original RPM package. It
would be helpful to know if the following is possible by just following
the upgrade (-U option to RPM) /patching process.

1. What I understand from the difference between upgrade and patching
is that upgrade changes the version number where as patch does not
change the version number. Are there any other difference(s)?
2. How do we patch an RPM package?
3. Does RPM create a backup of all the files that it is upgrading or
patching?
4. Does RPM provide a method to backout a package after it has been
upgraded or patched?

Thanks in advance,
Shekar
