I would not advise that. In theory, and up until a few versions ago, such
an upgrade would have been possible. In practice however this usually
causes a lot of problems.
With regard to the Mandriva 2009 distribution however, I would strongly
advise against an upgrade, because of some major differences in how the
kernel treats PATA IDE devices and the switch from KDE 3.x to KDE 4.x.
Another difference is that Mandrake 9.x still used /devfs/ and a 2.4 kernel,
and 10.x had a preliminary version of /udev/ if you opted for the 2.6
kernel, but this preliminary version was nothing like the /udev/ system in
use today. This very machine here still has 10.0 on it, with a 2.6.3
kernel, and here /udev/ used a separate directory in the root, instead of
using */dev* and replacing its population as it does now.
So I would recommend backing up your data, and then installing 2009 from
scratch. Everything will be set up much more consistently than if you were
to attempt an upgrade over an existing installation. Conflicting
configuration files, file placement, et al.
