Where's the Ubuntu audio file that plays after you login?
I'd like to replace it with the 5.04 version (if it's the same place
in both 6.10 and 5.04).

Just go to System > Preferences > Sound
I've disabled the login and logoff sounds - wearing headphones on a
lappy, and these noises nearly sent me deaf

Thanks, actually I like the 5.04 startup. The Preferences gave me the name,
and find(1) found it : /usr/share/sounds/startup3.wav
I'll copy it over to the 6.10 system.

Ya, 5.04 (and 5.10) startup3.wav is awesome.

What does good ol' Edgy Eft use for startup?

Well, it doesn't work
http://home.att.net/~rhhardind/startup3.wav (2mb) is the file
It plays okay on XP.
doing a
cd /usr/share/sounds
mv startup3.wav startup3.wav.orig
cp /fat/startup3.wav . # copied into /fat by windows XP, a FAT32 partition
results in no sound on login. Don't know why.
Maybe it's too long (replaces a shorter file), or maybe it's that
the original startup3.wav is a link to startup.wav and it wants a link, who knows.

Plays fine here. Sounds just like my 5.10 (breezy) PC startup3.wav.

ya, check the permissions on the file. it doesn't have to live in
/usr/share/sounds. place it in your home directory and use the gnome
sound pref panel to find it. should work. but yup, startup3.wav here is
a link to startup.wav too.
should work though, i've changed the start up sound a few times to sound
files (.wav) in my home dir with no problems. i've always gone back to
the default sound.
