Linux is quite a bit better than any version of Windows (maybe even
Server) at dealing with multiple high-CPU tasks.
Much better.
It's like the old complaint I had about the response of MS-DOS versus
UNIX to Ctrl-C.

Despite what the fanboys might try to say, Apple designs are
inferior when it comes to dealing with heat and power management.
Exposing any of that sort of thing might interfere with the whole
"dumbing everything down" approach they like to take.

What are you talking about? Seriously... dumbing what down?
Apple is very, very good at making products that serve people's needs (and
wants) very well - hence their very high user satisfaction ratings. This is
not "dumbing" down anything - it is showing a better understanding of the
need to focus on goals and getting stuff done and not on things which, by
themselves, have no real purpose such as "flexibility" and
"configurability". And before what I said get twisted, the phrase "by
themselves" is no meaningless.

Jedidiah is a dinosaur who has watched his "magical" cli skilss
become mostly obsolete for the average user.
He is still living in the past and considers GUI and clicking on
icons to be dumbed down compared to typing something like:
fiReFox-12.14.5-05.r1

The Linux school of thought disagrees.
They LOVE tinkering and playing around with their operating systems.
It makes them feel superior.
Most folks however think of the computer as an applicance to perform
work with and are far less interested in tinkering which is why you
rarely see high levels of customization of Windows desktops on many
people's systems.
The goal is to get the work done in the easiest fashion and not have
to even deal with the computer other than to produce the output. |

If that is what he meant, though, OS X has a command line as well... but,
sure, for most users they do not even know it exists. The GUI is good
enough where it is, essentially, never needed.

Working with the computer becomes the goal - instead of getting work done
with a computer.

Right: people want to get work done. Now customizations / options can help
with that - and that is fine. But this whole adding of options as a goal in
itself is absurd.

All they do is recompile this or recompile that. They'll never just
download a binary that works. Other than that, they are frantically
trying to find a good job for their hobbyware. |
