I log in to another computer with ssh -X. Then I run Firefox. Then I
type localhost in location field in the Firefox window that just
showed up. I get the default web page on the web server running on the
computer from which I started the ssh session.

I though logging in with ssh -X only forwarded the X graphics so to
speak. It's like I simultaneously was running ssh -L 80:localhost:
80 ...

What happening here?

I demand that John may or may not have written...

You already had Firefox running on the local machine, the remote Firefox
launcher script noticed that it could contact an already-running instance
(using X to do so, so it ended up communicating over the ssh tunnel) and told
that to open a new window.

You still need the last file you removed.
